Global Fund to provide $9.1m to Belarus to fight TB
MINSK, 29 November (BelTA) – The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has earmarked nearly $9.1 million to help Belarus fight multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB), BelTA learnt from Inna Nekrasova, Senior TB Adviser for the Global Fund TB Grant Project Management Group.
She informed that that the agreement on providing the grant to the Republic of Belarus will be signed at the Healthcare Ministry of Belarus on 27 November. The grant will be used to finance the second phase of the international technical aid project “STOP-TB Strategy Implementation in the Republic of Belarus in particular aimed at fighting Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB)”. The document will be signed by Belarus’ Deputy Healthcare Minister Igor Gayevsky and UN/UNDP Resident Coordinator in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha.
The project was launched on 1 January 2011. The main goal of the project is to enhance efficiency of measures to reduce and prevent further spread of tuberculosis in Belarus. The second phase of the project aims at increasing access to quality MDR-TB diagnostics and treatment, Inna Nekrasova said.
