MINSK, 28 June (BelTA) – The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus proposed to appoint two-time Olympic champion Ekaterina Karsten captain and tennis player Max Mirnyi flag-bearer of Belarus’ Olympic team for the 2012 London Olympic Games, NOC First Vice-President Igor Zaichkov said at a session of the Executive Committee of the National Olympic Committee, BelTA learnt.
“I think this is a decent choice. We already discussed the issue with Max Mirnyi and he said he will be honored to carry the national flag. Taking into account the sportsmen’s arrival dates to the London Olympic Games these candidates are the most optimal. We considered other athletes but they will not be able to be present at the opening ceremony,” Igor Zaichkov explained. He added that the proposed candidates are to be confirmed by NOC President Alexander Lukashenko. Secretary General of the NOC Georgy Katulin noted that the deadline for choosing the captain and the flag-bearer is 22 July.
The 2012 Summer Olympics will be held in London from 27 July to 12 August.
