MINSK, 6 August (BelTA) - Belarusian tennis player Victoria Azarenka is among world’s five highest-paid female athletes, according to the list issued by the Forbes magazine and published on its official website.
Victoria Azarenka’s total earnings amount to $15.7 million, including $6.7 million in prize money and $9 million of endorsements.
Topping the ranking for a ninth straight year is Russia’s Maria Sharapova. From June 2012 to July 2013 she earned $29 million, out of which $6 million were prize money (plus bonuses and money for participation in commercial events) while other $23 million came from long-term contracts and advertizing. All in all, during her career 26-year-old Maria Sharapova earned about $180 million, the sum of her prize money approaching $27 million, which is the third best result in the history of tennis. Only Americans Serena and Venus Williams boast better figures.
Top three female athletes also includes Serena Williams with $20.5 million ($8.5 in prize money and $12 millions from sponsors) and China’s Li Na with $18.2 million ($3,2 million in prize money and $15 million of endorsements). Fifth on the list is racing car driver from the U.S. Danica Patrick with total earnings of $15 million.
